Sir Walter Scott was born in1771 in College Wynd in the Old Town of Edinburgh. His father was a solicitor. As a child, Walter Scott survived a childhood bout of polio that left him lame in his right leg for the rest of his life. In order to regain his health, Walter Scott was sent to live in the rural Borders region at his grandparents' farm at Sandyknowe. There, he was taught how to read and write by his aunt Jenny.
Sir Walter Scott began writing by the age of 25. He translated works from German, his first publication being rhymed versions of ballads by Bürger in 1796. Later he published a three-volume set of collected Scottish ballads, The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. From a literary standpoint, this was the first sign of his interest in Scottish history.
Sir Walter Scott married Margaret Charlotte Charpentier in 1797. They had five children. Sir Walter Scott earned his living from his earnings at the law. Sir Walter's famous quotes include two on Christmas. They are:
Heap on the wood!-the wind is chill;
But let it whistle as it will,
We'll keep our Christmas merry still.
A Christmas gambol oft could cheer
The poor man's heart through half the year.
